Headache on the right side of the head: what to know

Short answer
A headache on the right side of the head may relate to migraine, muscle tension, sinus symptoms, dehydration, heat, or another cause, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Immediate priority
- Emergency assessment for sudden severe pain or neurological or visual changes
What the location can mean
The side of the pain does not identify one diagnosis by itself. A pulsing headache with nausea or sensitivity to light can fit a migraine pattern. Pressure around the forehead, cheeks, or nose with congestion may occur with allergic rhinitis, a common cold, or chronic sinusitis. Tight scalp, jaw, or neck muscles can produce aching on one side, especially after prolonged screen use or poor sleep.
Heat, sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or not drinking enough can contribute to dehydration or heat exhaustion. Fever and body aches may point toward an infection such as COVID-19 or dengue fever. Recurrent headaches during worry or muscle tension can accompany generalised anxiety disorder, although the headache itself does not establish that condition.
What you can do now
Rest in a cool, quiet room and drink fluids gradually if you may have become dehydrated. Eat if you have missed a meal, reduce bright screens, and try gentle neck and shoulder movement. Note when the pain began, its severity, triggers, duration, and any nausea, fever, congestion, visual change, or weakness.
Use only an over-the-counter pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label. A pharmacist can check safety if you are pregnant, have kidney or stomach problems, take blood thinners, or have other regular medicines. Arrange a routine review if headaches recur, change pattern, interfere with work or sleep, or require frequent pain medicine.
When to seek medical care
Seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache, or headache after a head injury. Get urgent help with weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a seizure, a stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, or new loss of vision. A painful red eye with visual change also needs prompt assessment.
Seek same-day advice for a new headache with high fever, a spreading rash, severe dehydration, or worsening pain in hot conditions. If the pain is mild and settles but keeps returning, book a clinician review to examine the pattern and possible triggers.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What pattern does my headache suggest? Could my medicines, sleep, vision, jaw, neck, hydration, or work setup be contributing? Which warning symptoms should prompt urgent care, and what prevention plan is appropriate if attacks return?

Questions people ask
Does right-sided pain always mean migraine?
No. Migraine is one possibility, but tension, sinus symptoms, heat, dehydration, infection, and other causes can also produce one-sided pain.
When should recurring right-sided headaches be checked?
Arrange a clinician review when headaches recur, change pattern, disrupt daily activities, or need frequent pain medicine.
