Headache on one side of the head

Short answer
A headache on one side of your head may be caused by migraine, muscle tension, illness, dehydration, heat, or another problem, and its associated symptoms guide the response.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why one-sided pain happens
Migraine commonly presents as one-sided, throbbing pain and may include nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or a need to rest. A tight or pressing ache can be related to neck, scalp, or jaw tension, especially after poor sleep, stress, or prolonged posture. Fever, cough, body aches, or nasal symptoms may accompany the Common Cold or COVID-19. Thirst, dizziness, dark urine, or fatigue can accompany Dehydration, while heavy sweating and weakness after heat exposure can occur with Heat Exhaustion. One-sided location alone cannot tell you which explanation applies.
Managing a mild episode
Write down when the pain starts, what it feels like, how long it lasts, and any triggers such as missed meals, poor sleep, heat, stress, or screens. Rest in a quiet place, limit glare and noise, drink fluids gradually, and eat if you have not eaten. Gentle neck and shoulder relaxation may help a pressure-like ache. Use a labelled over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is suitable for you; ask a pharmacist about interactions and health conditions. See a clinician if episodes recur, change, or repeatedly require medicine.
Urgent and emergency symptoms
Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, speech trouble, confusion, fainting, seizure, new vision loss, or a stiff neck with fever. Obtain prompt assessment for persistent vomiting, headache after a significant injury, or a new headache during pregnancy or with a weakened immune system. Do not wait for self-care to work when neurological symptoms are present.
Questions worth asking
Does my pattern fit migraine or tension-type headache? Which triggers should I monitor? What pain relief is safe with my current medicines? Would an examination of my eyes, neck, jaw, or blood pressure be useful?
