What should you know about headache during menstruation?

Some people notice head pain before bleeding starts or during the first days of a period. Hormonal change may lower the threshold for migraine, while cramps, poor sleep, skipped meals, stress, or fluid loss can add strain. A period-related pattern is more useful than a single episode: note the day of your cycle, pain location, duration, associated symptoms, and any medicines taken.

Keep meals and fluids regular, protect your sleep, and rest in a dark, quiet room if light or noise worsens the pain. A cool pack on the forehead or neck may be soothing. Gentle activity can help some people, while others need stillness. Use pain medicine only as directed and ask a pharmacist about interactions, stomach or kidney concerns, or if you might be pregnant. Frequent use can itself contribute to repeated headaches.

Get urgent care for a sudden explosive headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, speech or vision change, seizure, fever with neck stiffness, or repeated vomiting. Make an appointment if the pattern is new, disabling, lasts beyond your period, changes noticeably, or is becoming harder to control.
