Headache Behind the Left Ear: What to Know

The area behind the ear is close to neck muscles, the jaw joint, scalp nerves, and the ear itself. Turning the neck, poor posture, or a tight shoulder may reproduce the pain. Migraine can be one-sided and may include nausea or light sensitivity without an obvious ear problem. Earache, reduced hearing, drainage, fever, or pain when the outer ear is touched suggests an ear-related issue. Jaw clenching or chewing can strain the nearby joint. A tender lump, redness, or swelling behind the ear deserves an examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Rest the neck in a comfortable neutral position and use gentle shoulder movement. Try a warm compress over tense muscles, but do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear. Choose softer foods briefly if chewing aggravates the area and notice whether clenching is occurring. Drink water and rest. If using pain relief, follow the label and ask a pharmacist if you have kidney, stomach, liver, bleeding, pregnancy, or medicine concerns. Note ear symptoms, skin changes, dental symptoms, injury, and triggers.

Seek emergency help for sudden severe headache, facial drooping, weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, difficulty speaking, or a major new vision problem. Get urgent assessment for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe ear pain with fever, ear drainage, new hearing loss, or pain after injury.
