Headache around the temples: what to know

A pressing band across the temples can accompany muscle tension from prolonged concentration, stress, jaw clenching, or neck strain. Migraine may cause throbbing temple pain with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Heat, sweating, missed meals, and inadequate fluids can contribute to Dehydration or Heat Exhaustion. A cold, COVID-19, Allergic Rhinitis, or Chronic Sinusitis may bring headache with congestion or fever. In an older adult, new temple tenderness with scalp sensitivity, jaw pain while chewing, or visual symptoms requires urgent medical assessment because inflammation near the artery can threaten sight.

Rest your eyes and jaw, loosen tight shoulders, drink fluids, and eat regularly. A cool or warm compress may help, depending on which feels better. Keep a brief diary of timing, side, pressure or throbbing quality, sleep, meals, screen use, stress, and associated symptoms. Use pain medicine only as directed; frequent use can itself maintain recurring headaches, so discuss a repeated pattern with a clinician or pharmacist.

Seek emergency help for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, speech difficulty, stiff neck with fever, or loss of vision. Arrange urgent assessment for new temple pain with jaw pain on chewing, scalp tenderness, double vision, or visual loss, especially in later adulthood. Book a medical review if headaches are becoming more frequent, changing character, waking you, or interfering with work or sleep.
