Headache after hitting your head: what to know

Pain may come from bruised scalp or neck muscles, or from a concussion affecting how the brain works temporarily. Feeling dizzy, sick, unusually tired, sensitive to light, or unable to concentrate can occur with concussion. The force, location and timing of the blow matter, as does whether you lost consciousness or take medicine that affects bleeding.

Stop sport, driving and activities that could cause another impact. Rest quietly, limit screens if they worsen symptoms, and ask someone you trust to check on you. Drink fluids and use only a pain reliever that a clinician or pharmacist says is suitable for you. Do not drink alcohol. Arrange medical advice for a new headache after a head injury, even if it seems mild, and describe exactly when it began.

Seek emergency help for a worsening or severe headache, repeated vomiting, increasing sleepiness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, unequal pupils, fluid or blood from the nose or ears, or difficulty walking. Urgent assessment is also needed after a high-impact injury or if the person cannot be observed safely.

Ask whether you need observation or a scan, when you can return to work or exercise, which pain medicines are appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger immediate reassessment.
