Headache after coughing: what to know

A forceful cough briefly tightens muscles in the chest, neck and scalp and changes pressure in the head. A blocked nose or irritated airways can add facial pressure. Common Cold, COVID-19, Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Sinusitis may all involve coughing or congestion, but the headache itself cannot identify the cause. Track whether pain starts only with coughing, how quickly it settles, and whether it occurs with fever, breathlessness or neurological symptoms.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and reduce smoke, dust and other airway irritants. Treat a dry throat with warm drinks or suitable soothing measures. Avoid deliberately suppressing a productive cough without advice, because mucus may need to clear. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever only if it is appropriate for you and follow the label. A pharmacist can check for interactions, especially if you take regular medicines.

Get urgent help for a thunderclap headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, new vision or speech problems, chest pain, blue lips or severe breathing difficulty. Seek prompt medical advice when the cough headache is new, worsening, triggered by gentle coughing, or continues after the cough improves. Fever with worsening illness or poor fluid intake may also require assessment.

Ask whether your cough, nasal congestion, asthma symptoms, infection or medicine could be driving the pain. Share when the headache began, its location, its intensity, the cough pattern and any fever or breathing change.
