What should you know about HDCV rabies?

HDCV stands for human diploid cell vaccine, a vaccine made using a specific human cell culture for production. It trains the immune system to recognise rabies virus. Rabies can affect the brain and nerves after infection, so a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or mucous membranes needs prompt professional risk assessment. A healthy-looking animal does not remove the need for advice when exposure is possible.

Wash the wound immediately with plenty of soap and running water, then seek urgent medical care. Do not wait for symptoms or rely on home remedies. A clinician will assess the animal, the contact, the wound, and your previous rabies vaccination. They may recommend rabies vaccine and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin. Tell the service when and where the contact occurred and whether the animal can be safely identified.

Any possible exposure from a mammal warrants urgent advice, especially a bite or scratch that breaks skin, saliva near the eyes or mouth, or contact with a bat. Seek emergency care for a deep wound, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection. Tingling, fever, difficulty swallowing, agitation, or confusion after a possible exposure are emergencies; do not wait for a scheduled appointment.

Ask whether your contact meets the definition of an exposure, which vaccine plan is needed, and whether immunoglobulin is indicated. Clarify wound care, follow-up timing, animal observation or testing, and what to do if a vaccine visit is missed.
