HCC and PET scan: what the test can show

Tracer uptake can vary between liver tumours, and inflammation or other active tissues can also take up tracer. A PET-CT image therefore cannot be read in isolation. Doctors may compare it with contrast imaging, liver function, tumour markers, biopsy findings when needed, and the person's history. It can also help investigate disease outside the liver or a cancer whose starting site is uncertain.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, medicines, activity, and arrival time. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent infection, and any previous reaction to contrast or tracer. After the tracer is administered, you may need to rest quietly before imaging. Ask how long the appointment may take and when the report will reach your treating team.

Before the appointment, contact the imaging team if fasting is unsafe for you or your blood sugar is difficult to manage. After the scan, seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial or throat swelling, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash. Report new severe abdominal pain, confusion, or yellowing promptly to your cancer or liver team.

Ask what question the PET-CT is meant to answer, whether contrast CT or another liver scan is also needed, and how the result may change the treatment plan. Ask how the tracer is selected, what preparation applies to you, and who will explain the findings.
