Hard pea-sized lump: what to know

A hard pea-sized lump cannot be identified by size alone and should be checked if it persists or changes. Location, depth, mobility, tenderness, skin appearance, and duration help a clinician decide what it may represent. A small lump can be a lymph node, skin-related growth, or another type of tissue.

Recent infection near the throat, ear, teeth, or scalp may cause a reactive lymph node. A lump that is smooth and mobile can behave differently from one that is fixed or attached to deeper tissue, although touch is not diagnostic. Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, and Cancer of Unknown Primary are possible clinical considerations for some persistent neck masses, not assumptions based on size.

Measure it gently only when needed, record where it sits, and note whether it is changing. Write down recent illness, skin irritation, dental work, vaccination, medicines, and symptoms such as hoarseness or swallowing difficulty. Arrange an appointment if it remains present or concerns you. The clinician may examine nearby areas and choose observation, imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe systemic illness. Request prompt review for a lump that grows, becomes hard to move, causes persistent pain, is associated with fever or night sweats, or appears with unexplained weight loss or ongoing voice change.

Ask which features make the lump more likely to be a lymph node or skin lesion, whether its position warrants imaging, and how the result would change the next step.
