Hard painful lump on the back of the neck

A hard painful lump on the back of your neck should be assessed, especially when pain, redness, or swelling is worsening. Pain often reflects inflammation in the skin, a nearby infection, or an irritated lymph node, but it does not by itself identify the cause. The area should not be squeezed or pierced.

Red, warm, tender skin can point toward an inflamed skin structure or infection. A nearby scalp wound, insect bite, ear problem, or throat illness may cause lymph-node swelling. A persistent neck mass can also occur with Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, or Cancer of Unknown Primary; the presence of pain does not confirm or exclude these conditions. The examination focuses on depth, movement, skin changes, and nearby symptoms.

Contact a doctor promptly and describe how quickly the pain and lump developed. Mention fever, drainage, recent hair removal or skin injury, dental symptoms, sore throat, and medicines or allergies. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the package directions. Keep the skin clean and avoid tight collars or friction. A clinician may recommend examination, imaging, or sampling.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, confusion, marked weakness, or swelling that grows quickly. Prompt review is also needed if fever continues, pus develops, the lump becomes fixed, or the swelling does not settle after the surrounding illness improves.
