What should you know about hard dandruff?

Dandruff produces visible flakes from the scalp, and scale may feel hard when oils, shed skin, and hair products collect together. Itching often accompanies the flaking. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause more persistent scale with redness or greasy patches, especially around the scalp margins, ears, or eyebrows. Flaking alone cannot identify the cause; psoriasis, irritation from products, or another scalp problem may look similar. Notice whether the scale is dry or greasy, whether the scalp is red, and whether hair loss or broken hairs are present.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle routine and allow a medicated shampoo to contact the scalp for the time stated on its label or by a clinician. Loosen softened scale with fingertips rather than scratching with nails. Avoid picking, harsh scraping, and heavy fragranced products if they sting. A clinician may recommend medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment when dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is suspected. Improvement can take repeated use, and maintenance may be needed when flakes return.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if thick flakes persist despite appropriate shampoo use, or if the scalp is very itchy, sore, swollen, or cracked. Seek prompt care for pus, crusting with spreading redness, fever, patches of hair loss, or broken hairs. A sudden widespread rash after a new product also deserves review. These features may point to infection, marked inflammation, or contact irritation rather than simple dandruff.

Ask which scalp condition best fits the pattern, how long to use a medicated shampoo, and whether an antifungal treatment is appropriate. Mention hair loss, product reactions, facial scale, or symptoms in the ears because these details can change the assessment.
