Hangover headache cure: what helps

Alcohol can contribute to fluid loss, disturbed sleep, stomach irritation and changes in blood vessels. These effects may combine into a throbbing, pressure-like or generalised headache. Bright light, movement and noise can make it feel worse. A headache after drinking is not always a hangover; dehydration, a viral illness or an injury can also cause head pain.

Sip water regularly, or use an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or sweating has left you depleted. Eat a small meal containing carbohydrates and some protein when your stomach allows it. Rest in a cool, quiet room and avoid driving while dizzy, drowsy or impaired. Check the label before taking a painkiller: alcohol and some medicines can irritate the stomach or affect the liver. Do not drink more alcohol as a remedy.

Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, a stiff neck with fever, or a head injury. Arrange medical advice if the headache does not improve, keeps returning after drinking, or comes with signs of significant dehydration such as very little urine or inability to keep fluids down.
