What should you know about handheld MRI scanner?

A portable system may be brought to a bedside, clinic room or other setting instead of moving a person into a large scanner. Its smaller design can make focused imaging more accessible, but it may produce less detailed or narrower images than a full-size system. The suitable device depends on the body part, the clinical question and the need for follow-up imaging.

An image is not a diagnosis by itself. A trained clinician or radiologist reviews the findings alongside symptoms, examination and other tests. If a result is unclear, a conventional MRI, biopsy or another investigation may be advised.

Tell the team about metal fragments, implants, pacemakers, medication pumps, pregnancy and any difficulty staying still. Remove metal objects as directed. Follow positioning instructions and remain still while images are collected; ask how the scan will be reported and whether the portable system is being used for screening, monitoring or a specific diagnostic question.

The scan itself should not cause radiation exposure. Report discomfort, worsening symptoms or a new neurological change to the treating team rather than waiting for an imaging result. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, severe breathing difficulty, collapse or rapidly worsening pain.

Ask which area will be scanned, whether the device can answer your clinical question, how its images compare with a standard MRI, and what follow-up will happen if the result is uncertain.
