Short answer

Hand joint swelling reflects inflammation, fluid, injury, or changes within a joint, and its timing, pattern, pain, and stiffness help guide the right evaluation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Describe
Joints involved, speed of onset, warmth, stiffness, and triggers
Try
Gentle movement, elevation, and a wrapped cool pack
Act quickly
Hot painful swelling with fever or sudden colour or movement changes

What the pattern can show

A joint may swell after a sprain or repeated strain, or because its lining is inflamed. Osteoarthritis often causes activity-related aching and stiffness, while rheumatoid arthritis can present with several swollen, stiff joints. Psoriatic arthritis may accompany psoriasis or changes around a nail. Gout and pseudogout are crystal-related causes that can produce a sudden, very painful, warm joint. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

Record which joints are involved, whether both hands are affected, how quickly swelling appeared, and whether morning stiffness, warmth, fever, skin changes, or an injury is present. Examination and, when needed, tests can distinguish these possibilities.

What to do at home

Rest from activities that clearly worsen the swelling, but gently move the fingers within a comfortable range to prevent stiffness. Elevate the hand and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods. Remove tight rings. Avoid starting leftover medication or combining pain medicines; a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether anti-inflammatory medication is appropriate for your health history.

If swelling keeps returning, arrange an appointment. A clinician may discuss hand exercises, splinting, anti-inflammatory medication, or a cortisone injection depending on the cause and examination findings.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for a hot, intensely painful joint with fever or feeling unwell, rapidly spreading redness, or a wound nearby. Urgent assessment is also needed after significant trauma, when a finger looks deformed, or when you cannot move or use the hand. Sudden weakness, numbness, or a pale or blue hand requires emergency help.

Questions for your doctor

Which pattern does my swelling suggest? Do I need imaging or blood tests? Would hand therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, or an injection be suitable, and what risks apply to me?

Questions people ask

What conditions can cause swollen hand joints?

Injury, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, and pseudogout are among the possibilities. The pattern and examination help separate them.

Should I keep moving a swollen finger joint?

Gentle movement within comfort can limit stiffness, but stop if pain sharply increases and seek advice when swelling is severe or movement is restricted.
