Hand eczema and dry skin: what to know

Healthy outer skin helps keep moisture in and irritants out. In hand eczema, inflammation disrupts that barrier. The skin may feel rough or tight, peel, itch, sting, or develop tiny cracks. Water, soap, sanitiser, detergents, dust, and friction can remove surface oils and make symptoms more noticeable.

Dryness alone does not confirm eczema. Psoriasis, fungal infection, and contact allergy can affect the hands with overlapping signs. The location, nail changes, one-sided pattern, exposure history, and response to treatment help a clinician distinguish them.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient several times through the day, especially immediately after washing. Choose a thicker ointment or cream for very dry areas and smooth it over the backs of the hands, palms, fingertips, and around the nails. Emollient therapy works best when it becomes part of the washing routine.

Use lukewarm water, a mild cleanser, and gentle drying. Wear suitable gloves for wet work, with a soft liner if sweating or rubbing is a problem. Do not scratch or pull peeling skin. A clinician can add a topical corticosteroid when inflammation is active; stubborn disease may be assessed for narrowband UVB phototherapy.

Arrange a review if dryness continues despite consistent moisturising, spreads beyond the hands, or causes repeated fissures that affect daily tasks. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. Breathing difficulty or sudden facial swelling requires emergency care.
