What should you know about hand early psoriatic arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint condition. In the hand, it can cause joint pain, visible swelling, tenderness and morning joint stiffness. A whole finger or toe may swell, and symptoms can affect one or several joints. Some people have psoriasis of the skin or nails, but joint symptoms can also appear before obvious skin changes.

A clinician considers the pattern, examination findings, skin and nail changes, family history and other possible causes. Keep a short record of which joints swell, how long morning stiffness lasts, and whether symptoms improve as you move.

Book an assessment if hand swelling, pain or stiffness persists or keeps returning. During a flare, balance gentle movement with rest and avoid gripping tasks that clearly increase pain. Warm water may ease stiffness for some people; stop if it increases swelling.

Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication or a tailored physiotherapy plan, depending on your examination and medical history. Do not start or stop prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber. Protect the hand from prolonged awkward positions while keeping comfortable daily movement.

Arrange prompt medical care for a hot, very swollen joint, rapidly worsening pain, fever or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help for sudden loss of hand function, new weakness, severe numbness or a finger that changes colour.

A review is worthwhile when symptoms interfere with work, sleep, dressing or gripping, even if the swelling comes and goes. Earlier evaluation can clarify whether inflammation is affecting the joints and what support is appropriate.
