What should you know about half side headache?

Short answer
A half-side headache can arise from migraine, muscle tension, illness, dehydration, or heat, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain pattern
- One side of the head may hurt, but the location alone does not identify the cause.
- Useful record
- Note onset, duration, triggers, and accompanying symptoms.
What one-sided pain can mean
Migraine often causes throbbing or pulsing pain on one side and may come with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Tension in the neck, jaw, or scalp can also feel stronger on one side. A blocked or inflamed nose may cause pressure around the forehead, cheek, or eye; Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or a Common Cold can be relevant. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion may bring headache with thirst, weakness, dizziness, or heavy sweating. A headache is not enough to identify one condition, and the direction of the pain alone does not provide a diagnosis.
What to do now
Rest in a quiet, cool room and drink fluids if you can do so normally. A small meal may help if you have missed food. Reduce bright screens, strong smells, and strenuous activity while the pain settles. Keep a note of when it began, which side hurts, how long it lasts, and whether fever, congestion, vomiting, visual changes, or light sensitivity appear. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label; frequent use can itself contribute to recurring headaches. A clinician can review repeated episodes and consider triggers such as sleep disruption, stress, or anxiety.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a seizure, a stiff neck with fever, or a new headache after a significant head injury. Arrange prompt medical assessment if headaches are new and persistent, steadily worsening, repeatedly waking you, or accompanied by ongoing vomiting or a change in vision. Fever with marked illness after travel may need assessment for infections such as Dengue Fever or COVID-19.
Questions for your doctor
Could this pattern fit migraine or another headache type? Which symptoms should make me seek urgent help? Are any of my medicines, sleep habits, vision needs, or blood-pressure readings relevant? What should I record if the headaches return?
