Hairfall due to dandruff: what to know

Dandruff causes visible flakes and may come with an itchy scalp. Scratching can break fragile hairs or inflame the skin, making shedding more noticeable during washing. Seborrheic dermatitis can produce more persistent redness, scale, and irritation. However, dandruff alone does not explain every pattern of hair loss: patchy loss, a widening part, or recession may point to a separate hair disorder.

A clinician can inspect the scale, follicle openings, and distribution of loss. This helps distinguish temporary breakage or shedding from inflammation, infection, or another process affecting growth.

Use a Medicated Shampoo Treatment as directed, allowing the product enough contact time before rinsing. Avoid scratching, harsh scrubbing, and very hot water. If dandruff remains active, a clinician may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment or another targeted option. Keep combs and brushes clean, and avoid sharing them during an irritated scalp episode.

Arrange medical review if hairfall is sudden, patchy, painful, or associated with broken skin, thick scale, pus, marked redness, or eyebrow loss. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading scalp swelling or fever. Persistent shedding after the flaking improves also deserves a separate hair-loss assessment.

Ask whether the scalp changes fit dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, how long to use the recommended treatment, and whether the distribution of hairfall suggests an additional cause.
