During assessment, the clinician reviews your pattern of loss, hair calibre, donor density, scalp condition and medical history. Treatment commonly involves harvesting follicular units and placing them into small recipient sites that follow the natural direction of growth. The aim is to improve coverage and framing, not to recreate every lost hair. New growth takes time, and early shedding or crusting can make the scalp look different before it improves. Pattern loss may affect men or women; traction alopecia and patchy loss need careful diagnosis before surgery.

Bring a list of medicines and scalp products to your consultation, and disclose previous procedures, skin conditions and bleeding problems. Ask how existing hair loss will be managed because transplanted follicles do not prevent untreated native hair from thinning. After treatment, use the prescribed cleansing method, sleep as instructed, avoid rubbing or scratching grafts, and pause strenuous activity until cleared. Keep expectations practical: density, hair texture and the size of the donor area influence the result. PRP for hair loss or scalp micropigmentation may be discussed when surgery is unsuitable or when extra coverage is desired.

Report increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, persistent bleeding or a wound that is opening. Get urgent help for breathing trouble, collapse, severe allergic symptoms or swelling involving the eyes and vision. Mild tightness, tenderness, redness and crusts can be part of early healing, but worsening symptoms should be assessed by the treating team.

Ask what diagnosis is driving the loss, whether surgery is appropriate now, where follicles will be taken from, and how many future procedures your donor area might support. Clarify the technique, anaesthesia, aftercare, expected shedding, follow-up schedule and what symptoms should trigger a call.
