What should you know about hair scalp itchy?

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis often present with flakes and irritation. Scalp psoriasis can present with thicker, more defined scale. Folliculitis presents with tender or itchy bumps around hairs. Head lice present with intense itch and may leave visible nits attached close to the hair shaft. Stop any recently introduced product that burns or worsens the itch, and rinse the scalp thoroughly with lukewarm water. Avoid scratching, tight hairstyles, and sharing combs, brushes, hats, or pillows while lice or infection is possible. A medicated shampoo treatment may help selected flaking conditions when used exactly as directed. Lice require a product intended for head lice and careful checking of close contacts; ordinary shampoo will not reliably remove them. Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist or keep returning.

Seek medical advice promptly for painful pus-filled bumps, marked swelling, broken skin, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or areas of hair loss. A scaly patch with broken hairs or swollen glands needs evaluation because scalp ringworm can require prescription treatment. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling or breathing trouble after a product or medicine.

Ask whether the scale, bumps, or nits fit dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, folliculitis, or lice; which treatment is appropriate; how long to use it; and how to protect household contacts. Mention every new product and any hair loss, soreness, or discharge.
