Hair profile blood test: what to know

Short answer

A hair profile blood test is used to look for treatable health factors behind shedding, but results must be interpreted with your history and scalp examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test can explore

There is no single blood test that explains every type of hair loss. Depending on your symptoms, a clinician may consider blood counts, iron status, thyroid function, vitamin levels, blood sugar, inflammation, liver or kidney markers, and hormone tests. The choice depends on your age, medical history, diet, medicines, menstrual history and the pattern of shedding.

Results can point towards conditions such as Anaemia, Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease or Chronic Kidney Disease, but an abnormal result does not by itself prove that it caused the hair change. Some infections, including Dengue Fever, Brucellosis or Glandular Fever, can also affect energy and shedding during or after illness.

Preparing and following up

Ask whether you need to fast, take your usual medicines, or schedule the sample at a particular time. Tell the clinician about supplements, recent illness, weight change and family hair patterns. Bring photographs if shedding varies over time. A normal blood result does not rule out scalp or inherited causes, so examination remains useful. If a result is abnormal, ask what it means, whether it needs repeating, and how treatment will be monitored.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment for sudden patchy loss, scarring, scalp pain, marked inflammation, unexplained bruising, persistent fever, severe fatigue or unintentional weight loss. Seek urgent help for chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, severe dehydration or heavy bleeding. A hair test should not delay care for symptoms affecting your whole body.

Questions for your doctor

Which blood markers are relevant to my hair pattern and symptoms? Do I need any preparation? Could supplements alter the result? If the tests are normal, what scalp or hormonal causes should we consider? When will we review the findings?

Questions people ask

Can a blood test diagnose every cause of hair loss?

No. Blood tests look for selected health factors, while some scalp, inherited and hormonal causes need examination or other assessment.

Should I stop supplements before testing?

Ask the clinician or laboratory first; some supplements can affect results, but stopping prescribed treatment without advice is unsafe.
