What should you know about hair nits treatment?

Nits are lice eggs attached firmly to individual hairs, often close to the scalp. Dandruff or product residue tends to move more easily when brushed. Live lice can crawl, while eggs do not move on their own, so finding an egg does not always prove that live lice remain. Head lice spread mainly through close head-to-head contact; they are not a sign of poor hygiene.

Use a product intended for head lice exactly as its label or clinician directs, and do not combine different products unless advised. Wet-combing with a fine-toothed nit comb can remove lice and eggs; work in small sections from the roots and wipe the comb after each pass. Check close household contacts and treat only people with confirmed live lice or clear clinical advice. Wash recently used pillowcases, hats, and hair tools, and seal items that cannot be cleaned for a short period. Avoid spraying insecticide around the home.

Arrange medical advice if you cannot distinguish nits from debris, live lice remain after correctly following treatment, or the scalp has open sores, crusting, swelling, or pus. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and choose an option suitable for age, pregnancy, allergies, or a sensitive scalp. Seek prompt help if scratching is followed by spreading redness, fever, or marked pain.
