Neither test should be chosen from a list alone: results need to match your history, because a positive result can show sensitivity without proving that an exposure causes your symptoms.

Write down what you ate, touched, breathed in, or used before symptoms began, along with the body areas affected and how quickly symptoms appeared. Bring this record and any medicines to a general practitioner or allergy specialist. Do not stop prescribed treatment just to obtain a test result. If testing is recommended, ask which allergens are being assessed and how the result will change your plan. Avoid unproven hair testing that encourages unnecessary food or environmental restrictions.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after an exposure; these can signal anaphylaxis.
