Hair falling out with psoriasis: what to know

Scalp psoriasis can create raised, scaly areas that itch, crack, or feel sore. Scratching can break hairs close to the skin and repeated trauma can temporarily disturb follicles. Pulling scale away before it softens may remove hairs with it. Hair loss in this setting is often related to the inflamed scalp rather than psoriasis directly destroying every follicle. Patchy smooth loss, loss beyond affected plaques, or changes in the nails and other skin areas may suggest an additional hair disorder and should be examined.

Follow the scalp treatment prescribed for you and apply it as directed, including the contact time if a medicated cleanser is used. Soften scale rather than picking it, keep nails short, and use lukewarm water. Avoid tight hairstyles, harsh dyes, and vigorous brushing over plaques. A dermatologist can distinguish psoriasis from infection or another scalp problem and adjust treatment if the skin remains active. Do not stop a prescribed medicine suddenly without discussing it.

Arrange a review if hair loss forms smooth patches, continues after the scalp settles, or comes with broken hairs, pus, spreading redness, or tenderness. Prompt care is sensible for rapidly worsening inflammation, fever, or painful swelling. Eye-area involvement, extensive cracking, or difficulty managing itch also warrants timely medical advice.

Ask whether the loss is from active scalp psoriasis, scratching, or a separate condition; how to soften scale safely; and when regrowth should be checked. Mention every scalp product, hair treatment, and habit that may irritate the plaques.
