Hair falling out of eyebrows: what to know

Loss in smooth, sharply defined patches can occur with alopecia areata. Scaling, redness, soreness, or broken hairs may point toward an inflamed or infected skin surface. Frequent plucking, threading, waxing, rubbing, or tight cosmetic practices can gradually injure follicles. Hair loss on the scalp or other body areas makes a wider hair-growth disorder more relevant; shedding after illness, major stress, or a body change can also affect brows.

Pause plucking, waxing, and irritating brow products while the skin settles. Use a gentle cleanser and avoid scratching or rubbing the area. Take clear photographs in consistent lighting so changes are easier to track, and note whether scalp hair or eyelashes are changing too. A dermatologist can examine the brow skin and hair shafts, review medicines and recent health events, and decide whether tests or treatment are needed. Do not apply scalp medicines to the eyelid area without specific medical advice.

Arrange an assessment if eyebrow loss is spreading, returns repeatedly, leaves bare patches, or comes with scalp hair loss. Seek prompt care for marked redness, warmth, swelling, pus, significant pain, or eye irritation. Sudden loss of brows and eyelashes, or hair loss with fatigue, weight change, or other new symptoms, deserves medical review rather than self-treatment.

Ask what the distribution of loss suggests, whether the brow skin needs treatment, and which cosmetics or grooming habits to stop. You can also ask whether alopecia areata, traction alopecia, telogen effluvium, or another cause fits the timing and pattern.
