What should you know about hair dandruff and itchy scalp?

Dandruff can make the scalp itch as flakes and inflammation affect the surface. Seborrheic dermatitis may present with itch, redness, and greasy scale. A dry or irritated scalp can feel tight and flaky, while scalp psoriasis may create thicker, well-defined plaques. Head lice can cause intense itching and may leave nits attached close to hair roots; folliculitis can cause itchy or tender bumps around individual hairs.

The presence of itch does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Look at whether scale is greasy or dry, whether bumps or nits are present, and whether the rash extends beyond the scalp.

Use a gentle shampoo and wash away sweat, oils, and styling residue without scraping the skin. For suspected dandruff, a medicated shampoo may reduce scale and the scalp yeast that can contribute to symptoms; follow the label and keep it out of the eyes. Avoid scratching and pause new dyes, fragrances, or products if the itch began after using them. If lice are suspected, do not share combs, hats, or bedding, and ask about head lice treatment.

Get medical advice for spreading redness, pus, crusts, open sores, severe tenderness, or patchy hair loss. Arrange a scalp examination when itch continues despite appropriate washing, when thick plaques develop, or when you find attached nits or repeated household exposure. Prompt assessment helps match treatment to the cause.

Ask whether the scale looks like dandruff, psoriasis, or dermatitis; whether a fungal or lice treatment is needed; and which products should be avoided while the scalp heals.
