What should you know about hair breakage after a perm?

Perm solutions loosen internal bonds so the hair can take a new shape. That process can leave fibres more vulnerable, especially at the ends or on lengths already coloured, bleached, or relaxed. Snapping during washing, a frizzy rough texture, and many short pieces suggest breakage. A whole strand with a bulb is shed from the root and needs a different assessment. Scalp burning or a rash is not expected shaft-only damage and may signal irritation or allergy.

Do not add another perm, relaxer, bleach service, or intensive heat routine while the hair is fragile. Cleanse gently, condition the lengths, and use fingers or a wide-tooth comb to release tangles from the ends upward. Avoid tight braids, buns, and extensions. Pat hair dry instead of rubbing it, and consider a modest trim for split ends. Conditioning improves softness and reduces friction; it cannot rebuild a section that has snapped.

See a dermatologist if breakage is spreading, hair is coming out in patches, or the scalp has persistent pain, itch, redness, blisters, or crusting. Seek urgent care for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after the perm. Broken hairs with scale may point to scalp ringworm. Tender thinning along a hairstyle’s points of pull can be traction alopecia and deserves early attention.
