GT bursitis: what to know

Short answer
GT bursitis is irritation of a fluid-filled sac near the outer hip, often causing side-hip pain that worsens with pressure, walking, stairs, or lying on that side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Outer side of the hip
- Common aggravators
- Pressure, stairs, slopes, and side-lying
What the diagnosis describes
The greater trochanter is the bony prominence on the outside of the upper thigh. A bursa nearby helps tissues glide, but pressure, a sudden increase in activity, altered walking, or nearby tendon problems can make the area sensitive. Pain may spread down the outer thigh and can be tender when touched. Joint Swelling elsewhere does not automatically explain outer-hip pain.
A physical examination helps separate bursal irritation from hip-joint, tendon, lower-back, or nerve-related pain. The label may be used alongside irritation of the gluteal tendons, so treatment should match the findings rather than the name alone.
Ways to settle the area
Temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly compress or load the outer hip, such as side-lying on the painful side, long walks on slopes, and repeated stair use. Sleep on the comfortable side with a pillow between the knees, or on your back with support under the knees. A physiotherapist can adjust hip and trunk strengthening, walking mechanics, and the pace of returning to activity.
A clinician may discuss Anti-Inflammatory Medication when appropriate for your health history. If symptoms continue, options can include a Cortisone Injection; Joint Aspiration is considered only when fluid needs evaluation or removal. Do not press directly into the tender spot with force.
When to seek care
Arrange review if pain is persistent, interrupts sleep, causes a limp, or prevents ordinary walking and exercise. Seek prompt care for a hot or rapidly swollen area, fever, unexplained weight loss, new weakness or numbness, inability to bear weight, or severe pain after a fall. Sudden calf swelling or breathlessness needs urgent attention rather than routine bursitis care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pain is coming from the bursa, nearby tendons, the hip joint, or the back. Discuss exercises, sleeping positions, medication safety, injection benefits and risks, and what improvement should look like. Ask when imaging or a different diagnosis should be considered.

Questions people ask
Is GT bursitis only caused by inflammation?
Not always. Nearby tendon overload, altered movement, or repeated compression can keep the area sensitive, so the assessment should look beyond the bursa alone.
Should I massage the painful outer hip?
Firm direct pressure may aggravate a tender bursa. Ask a physiotherapist about safer movement and strengthening options first.
