What should you know about groin pull therapy?

Short answer

Groin pull therapy combines an examination, temporary load reduction, progressive strengthening and sport-specific practice before full return.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What therapy is designed to change

The aim is not simply to make pain quieter. Therapy identifies which movements load the adductors, checks hip and pelvic control, and restores the muscle's ability to tolerate force. Early sessions may focus on comfortable movement and reducing aggravating tasks. Later work can include resisted adduction, hip and trunk strengthening, balance, running mechanics and changes of direction. The plan should reflect whether the injury affects daily walking, recreational exercise or a demanding sport.

How treatment usually progresses

Begin by avoiding sprinting, kicking and wide steps that reproduce symptoms while keeping comfortable general movement. A physiotherapist may introduce gentle isometric loading, then increase resistance and range as the response remains settled. Exercise Therapy can support this progression. Running and sport drills are added one layer at a time, with attention to pain during activity and later that day. A Return-to-Sport Programme helps assess acceleration, cutting, kicking and confidence before unrestricted play. Complete the prescribed home work consistently and report any flare rather than abruptly abandoning the plan.

When therapy needs review

Request review if symptoms worsen across sessions, strength is not returning, walking remains limited, or pain keeps recurring when load increases. A medical assessment is particularly important after a pop, major bruising, significant trauma, or pain with a groin bulge. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, fever, new numbness, or testicular symptoms.

Questions for your care team

Ask what tissue is being treated, which exercises belong to the current phase, how much discomfort is acceptable, and what objective tests will guide your return to sport.

Questions people ask

Is physiotherapy needed for every groin pull?

Milder injuries may settle with sensible activity changes, but therapy is useful when pain persists, strength is reduced or sport demands are high.

What happens if pain returns during therapy?

Tell the therapist; the load, range or exercise choice may need adjusting before progression continues.
