What should you know about grid radiotherapy?

The beam is divided into small areas of higher and lower dose, creating a grid-like pattern. This approach may be considered when a tumour is bulky, lies close to sensitive structures, or needs a carefully shaped dose. It is a form of external radiotherapy, so the machine stays outside the body. The pattern, dose and number of sessions depend on the tumour’s position, size, symptoms and overall treatment plan.

Your radiation team will review scans, mark the treatment area and explain positioning. Tell them about previous radiotherapy, implanted devices, medicines, pregnancy, and any difficulty lying still. During treatment, remain in the planned position and report new discomfort, skin changes, swallowing difficulty or unusual tiredness. The team may combine grid treatment with other cancer care, depending on the diagnosis.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening pain, new weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent help for sudden severe breathlessness, a seizure, loss of consciousness or rapidly developing weakness. These symptoms need assessment because they can have causes unrelated to radiation as well as treatment-related causes.

Ask which tumour area is being targeted, why a grid pattern is suitable, how treatment will be combined with surgery or medicines, what side effects fit the treated body region, and whom to contact outside appointments.
