What should you know about granular mastitis?

Short answer

Granular mastitis describes inflammation in breast tissue that needs careful assessment to distinguish it from infection or other breast conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Granular mastitis describes inflammation in breast tissue that needs careful assessment to distinguish it from infection or other breast conditions. A person may notice a tender area, swelling, warmth, redness, a firm lump, or drainage. These features can overlap with other causes of breast change, so an examination is useful rather than relying on appearance alone.

What the term means

Mastitis means inflammation of the breast. The inflammation may involve milk-producing areas and nearby tissue, and it can occur during breastfeeding or outside that setting. Breast pain is a common presentation of mastitis, but pain alone does not identify its cause. A clinician may ask about recent pregnancy, feeding, nipple injury, medicines, and how the area has changed.

Assessment can include an examination and, when needed, breast imaging or a sample of tissue or fluid. Those steps help separate inflammation from a collection of pus, a blocked area, or another breast problem. The result guides treatment and avoids treating every breast lump in the same way.

What you can do now

Arrange a clinical review for a new, painful, firm, red, or persistent breast change. Until then, rest, drink fluids, and use a comfortable, supportive bra. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease swelling. If breastfeeding, continue only as comfortably tolerated and avoid forceful massage or repeated pressure on the sore area.

A lactation consultation can help check positioning, attachment, milk removal, and nipple trauma when feeding is part of the picture. Medicines, antibiotics, drainage, or anti-inflammatory treatment depend on the examination and any test results; do not start leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading, pain is rapidly increasing, you feel feverish or unwell, pus is present, or a lump remains after initial care. Urgent help is appropriate for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, or trouble breathing. A breast change that does not settle deserves reassessment even when discomfort is modest.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what findings support mastitis, whether imaging is needed, how to protect breastfeeding, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier review. You can also ask when the area should be checked again if the lump, drainage, or redness continues.

Questions people ask

Is granular mastitis the same as a breast infection?

Not necessarily. Inflammation and infection can look similar, so an examination and sometimes testing are needed to guide care.

Can breastfeeding continue with mastitis?

Many people can continue as comfortably tolerated, but feeding technique and pain should be reviewed with a clinician or lactation specialist.
