Gout: what to eat

Short answer
With gout, choose regular balanced meals, plenty of suitable fluids, vegetables, whole grains, and moderate portions of protein.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Choose more often
- Vegetables, whole grains, fruit, and suitable low-fat dairy
- Moderate
- Protein portions, including options your clinician approves
- Limit
- Organ meats, large meat or seafood portions, sugary drinks, and alcohol
How food relates to gout
The body converts purines from food into urate. High urate can allow crystals to form, but diet is only one influence; kidney clearance, genetics, medicines, alcohol, and body weight also matter. A food plan aims to reduce large urate loads while providing steady nutrition. Vegetables can remain part of meals, including many that contain purines, because removing nutritious foods unnecessarily can make eating harder. If you have kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, or another condition, your safest choices may need individual adjustment.
Build a gout-friendly plate
Use vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and low-fat dairy if these suit you. Choose moderate portions of eggs, poultry, tofu, beans, or other protein recommended for your health. Limit organ meats, large servings of red meat, some seafood, sugary drinks, and alcohol; a dietitian can tailor this list. Drink regularly within any fluid restriction. Keep meals consistent and avoid fasting or rapid weight-loss plans. Food changes support but do not replace a prescribed urate-lowering medicine.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment if a hot swollen joint comes with fever, chills, or severe illness, because infection needs different treatment. Arrange a clinical review for a first attack, frequent flares, persistent pain, or uncertainty about which foods are safe with your kidney function or medicines.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fluid is right for you, whether kidney tests change your food choices, and which protein sources fit your health needs. Ask whether a dietitian could help you plan satisfying meals and how diet should work alongside your gout medicine.
