Gout pain in the feet: symptoms and next steps

Short answer
Gout in the feet can cause sudden, intense pain, warmth, redness, and swelling around a toe, the midfoot, or ankle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding foot symptoms
Urate crystals can irritate the lining of a foot joint, causing inflammation that appears quickly. The big toe is a familiar location, but the joint at the base of a toe, the midfoot, and the ankle may also hurt. Skin over the joint can look red and feel hot; the foot may be sensitive to a sock, shoe, or bedsheet. Foot pain alone cannot diagnose gout. A sprain, cellulitis, another type of arthritis, or a joint infection may produce overlapping signs, so a new severe episode deserves a proper examination.
Caring for a painful foot
Limit walking while the flare is active and elevate the foot when resting. A cloth-wrapped cool pack can be used briefly for comfort. Wear footwear with a roomy toe box, or avoid a shoe that presses on the swollen area. Follow the medicine instructions supplied by your clinician; common pain medicines are not suitable for everyone, especially with kidney disease, ulcers, pregnancy, or interactions with other medicines. Keep a record of the joint involved, onset, swelling, and any triggers to share at review.
When to seek care for foot pain
Arrange urgent assessment if foot or ankle pain comes with fever, chills, a wound, spreading redness, or a rapidly worsening appearance. Seek prompt care if you cannot walk, the pain began after an injury, or this is your first suspected gout flare. These features can point to infection or injury rather than gout alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the painful foot joint needs testing, which treatment is safe with your other health conditions, and what to do if the same area flares again. Discuss footwear, activity, and whether recurring attacks call for prevention.

Questions people ask
Can gout cause pain in the top of the foot?
Yes. Gout may affect joints in the midfoot, including areas felt on the top of the foot. Other causes of top-of-foot pain are possible, so a clinician should assess a new or severe episode.
Should I walk on a foot affected by gout?
Reduce walking and pressure while pain and swelling are strong. If you cannot bear weight or symptoms followed an injury, seek prompt medical assessment.
