What a stye is

A stye is a tender, localised lump near the edge of the eyelid, often caused by inflammation around an eyelash follicle or oil gland. The lid may look swollen and red, and a small spot of discharge can develop. A stye is different from more general [Red Eye](/symptoms/red-eye/) or widespread [Eye Discharge](/symptoms/eye-discharge/), which may have other causes.

Care at home

Wash your hands, then place a clean warm—not hot—cloth over the closed eye for several minutes and repeat through the day. Gently clean away crusting with clean water. Do not squeeze, pierce, or rub the lump. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and clear, and do not share towels or cosmetics. Replace old eye makeup after the problem has resolved.

When to seek care

Get prompt medical advice for pain inside the eye, reduced or blurred vision, light sensitivity, fever, marked swelling, or redness spreading around the eye.
