What should you know about goat mastitis test?

Mastitis is inflammation of the udder. A screening test may examine milk from each udder half for changes such as altered cells, clots, watery texture, or another abnormal appearance. A veterinarian may also collect a clean milk sample for laboratory testing to identify bacteria and guide medicine choices. A screening result supports an assessment; it does not replace an examination of the goat, udder, milk, appetite, and temperature.

Use clean collection containers and follow veterinary instructions so the sample is not contaminated. Do not mix milk from different udder halves when collecting a sample. Until the veterinarian advises otherwise, keep milk from a suspected case separate from the household or bulk supply. Record which side looks abnormal, when changes began, and whether the goat is eating and behaving normally. Treatment decisions should account for the animal, the suspected cause, and medicine withdrawal instructions.

Arrange veterinary assessment promptly for a hot, swollen, painful, firm, or discoloured udder, abnormal milk, reduced appetite, lethargy, or a goat that feels feverish. Seek urgent veterinary help if the goat is very weak, unable to stand, severely dehydrated, or deteriorates quickly. Breast pain and painful breastfeeding are human terms; for a goat, describe udder findings and milk changes to the veterinarian.
