What should you know about glandular fever liver function?

Glandular fever, also called infectious mononucleosis, may cause inflammation that changes liver blood-test results. A result outside the usual range does not by itself show how you feel or predict the course of illness. Your clinician considers the result alongside fever, tiredness, appetite, abdominal symptoms and examination findings.

During recovery, avoid alcohol and check before taking medicines or supplements that can affect the liver. Do not share medication with anyone else. Ongoing fatigue can remain after the throat and fever improve, so pacing activity is sensible.

Rest when symptoms are active, drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale, and choose small nourishing meals if appetite is low. Keep any arranged blood-test appointment and ask when results should be reviewed. Avoid strenuous contact activity until a clinician says it is appropriate, because glandular fever can enlarge the spleen as well as affect the liver.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening pain in the upper abdomen, fainting, confusion, yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than waiting for routine follow-up.

Contact a clinician soon if fever persists, your energy is steadily worsening, or you cannot maintain fluids. A sore throat, swollen glands or feeling generally unwell can occur with glandular fever, but a marked change in symptoms deserves review.

Ask which liver results were changed, whether they should be repeated, which medicines and supplements are suitable, and when you can resume alcohol, exercise and normal daily activity.
