What to know about GFCT PSA testing

Short answer
GFCT PSA testing refers to a blood test that measures prostate-specific antigen; the result needs clinical context and does not diagnose cancer by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sample
- PSA testing uses a blood sample.
- Meaning
- An abnormal result needs context and follow-up.
What the test measures
PSA is a protein made mainly by prostate tissue. A blood sample is used to measure the amount present. A higher result can occur with prostate cancer, but also with non-cancerous prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, or recent effects on the prostate. A lower result cannot by itself rule out every prostate problem.
Clinicians interpret the result alongside age, symptoms, examination findings, previous PSA results, medicines, and personal risk factors. One result is a starting point rather than a diagnosis. Depending on the overall picture, the next step may be repeat testing, another examination, imaging, or referral for further assessment.
How to prepare and follow up
Before the blood draw, tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, fever, recent procedures, medicines, and any previous PSA measurements. Ask whether anything should be avoided before testing and when the result will be reviewed. Do not interpret an abnormal result alone or stop prescribed medicine without advice.
If more assessment is needed, an MRI scan can provide detailed images of the prostate and surrounding tissues. Imaging helps clinicians decide whether a biopsy or another step is appropriate; it does not replace discussion of the blood result and examination.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for new difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine or semen, persistent pelvic or back pain, or urinary symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe pain, fever with urinary symptoms, or feel acutely unwell. These symptoms can have causes other than cancer, but prompt assessment can identify problems needing treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Why are you recommending PSA testing for me? What factors may affect my result? Should the test be repeated? How will you compare it with earlier results? Would an MRI scan or specialist review be useful, and what would determine the next step?
Questions people ask
Does a high PSA result mean prostate cancer?
No. Prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, and other factors can raise PSA. A clinician combines the result with other findings before deciding on follow-up.
What may happen after PSA testing?
Depending on the result and your clinical context, follow-up may include repeat testing, examination, MRI scan, or referral for further assessment.
