Getting a hysterectomy: what to know

After the womb is removed, you cannot carry a pregnancy and periods stop. Removing the ovaries may bring on menopause symptoms if they have not already stopped working. The operation may be considered for heavy periods, pelvic pain, fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, womb cancer, cervical cancer or changes in the womb lining. The route can be through the abdomen, vagina or keyhole surgery; the choice depends on the reason, womb size and previous operations.

Ask which organs will be removed, why that plan is advised, and whether another treatment could meet your goals. Arrange help with meals, transport and lifting during early recovery. Follow wound, bathing, medication and activity instructions, and attend the follow-up appointment. Gentle walking can support recovery, while strenuous exercise and vaginal sex should wait until your surgical team says they are suitable.

Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, a wound that becomes red or opens, repeated vomiting, painful urination or a swollen painful leg. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or sudden confusion. A small amount of discharge or spotting can occur, but new or increasing bleeding deserves advice.

Ask what type of hysterectomy you need, whether the cervix, tubes or ovaries will remain, how fertility and menopause may be affected, and what recovery restrictions apply. You can also ask about pain relief, warning signs and alternatives such as medicines or other procedures.
