What should you know about get a dexa scan?

The scan compares your bone mineral density with reference values and produces a result your clinician interprets alongside age, medical history, medicines and previous fractures. A result is not a complete prediction of whether a fracture will happen.

The DEXA scanner is open and the appointment usually involves lying still while the machine passes over the body. The test does not involve needles. Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie comfortably.

Follow the centre's instructions. Wear clothing without metal fasteners where possible and provide details of calcium supplements, steroid treatment, menopause history or conditions that affect bones. You can usually eat and drink normally unless the imaging service gives different instructions.

Afterward, discuss what the result means for your fracture risk, exercise, nutrition, fall prevention and any treatment. A repeat scan is arranged only when it is clinically useful.

A DEXA scan itself is not an emergency test. Contact your clinician sooner if you develop sudden severe back or hip pain after a minor injury, cannot bear weight, or have a new fracture. Ask for advice before attending if pregnancy is possible.

Ask why the scan is recommended, which bones will be measured, how your result will be interpreted, whether medicines or supplements affect preparation, and when the findings will change your care.
