GERD prevention

Short answer
GERD prevention focuses on recognising personal triggers, allowing digestion before lying down and following a plan that controls reflux.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What prevention can and cannot do
Reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. Prevention steps reduce common opportunities for this, but they cannot remove every cause. A hiatus hernia, certain medicines or pressure around the stomach may contribute, and symptoms can persist despite careful habits.
Triggers differ between people. A diary can help identify links with meal size, late eating, body position, alcohol, smoking or particular foods without creating unnecessary restrictions.
Build a practical routine
Choose portions that feel comfortable, eat at an unhurried pace and stay upright after meals. Leave a buffer between eating and bedtime. If night symptoms occur, ask a clinician about safe sleep-position changes. Work toward a healthy routine that suits you, and seek advice before changing prescribed medicines.
Treat recurring symptoms according to a clinician's plan. Ongoing cough, chest symptoms or poor sleep can be part of the pattern and should be mentioned.
When prevention is not enough
Seek urgent help for severe chest tightness, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood or black stools. Arrange prompt assessment for food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that continue despite prevention measures.
Questions to ask
Which triggers are most relevant to my symptoms? Should I change or review any medicines? What is a sensible plan for night-time reflux? When should recurring symptoms be investigated?

Questions people ask
Will avoiding one food prevent GERD?
Not necessarily. Triggers vary, so tracking your own pattern is more useful than avoiding broad food groups without a clear link.
Can prevention replace treatment?
Prevention may reduce episodes, but persistent symptoms may need professional assessment and a treatment plan.
