GERD and difficulty breathing: what should you know?

Reflux may irritate the throat or trigger cough, tightness and a feeling that breathing is restricted, especially after meals or when lying down. A Hiatus Hernia can increase reflux symptoms, while body weight and abdominal pressure may also influence them. Chronic Cough, Asthma, infection and heart or lung problems can feel similar.

Difficulty breathing is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Note whether it is sudden or gradual, occurs at rest or with exertion, and comes with wheeze, fever, chest pain, faintness or swelling in a leg. That detail helps separate reflux-related irritation from airway or circulation problems.

If symptoms are mild and familiar, sit upright, loosen tight clothing and avoid lying down after meals. Record food timing, reflux, cough and breathing sensations. Arrange a medical review for new, repeated or unexplained episodes; a clinician may review medicines and assess the chest, breathing and reflux together.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue lips, chest pressure, fainting, confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe comfortably.
