What should you know about a GE DEXA scan machine?

DEXA, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, is commonly used to examine areas such as the hip and lower spine. The scan creates measurements that a clinician interprets with your age, medical history, medicines, and risk factors.

A bone density scan can identify lower bone density and help guide a conversation about fracture prevention, exercise, nutrition, medicines, and follow-up. The result is not a complete picture of bone strength, and it does not predict exactly what will happen to one person.

Your clinician may recommend this test when there are risk factors for fragile bones, a previous fracture, certain long-term medicines, or hormonal changes. Premature ovarian insufficiency can affect bone health, so ask how your wider health history should be considered.

Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, have recently had another examination involving contrast material, or have difficulty lying still. Follow the centre’s instructions about medicines, supplements, and clothing; metal items may need to be removed from the scan area.

During the appointment, you usually lie on a scanning table while the arm of the machine passes over the selected body area. The examination is non-invasive, and you should remain still. Afterward, ask how the report will be shared and what follow-up is planned.

A DEXA scan is generally arranged as a planned assessment, not an emergency test. Seek urgent care after a fall or injury if you have severe pain, cannot bear weight, or notice a new deformity, because these symptoms may indicate a fracture even before a bone-density result is available.

Contact your clinician promptly if you develop sudden back pain, loss of height, or repeated falls. These concerns need clinical assessment rather than waiting for a scheduled scan or interpreting a machine report on your own.
