What should you know about Gaviscon for bloating?

Gaviscon forms a floating barrier over stomach contents and can reduce acid reaching the food pipe. That may soothe heartburn, sour taste or upper-abdominal discomfort that feels like fullness. Bloating, however, commonly comes from gas, constipation, food intolerance or changes in bowel function. A product aimed at reflux will not remove gas in the intestine or correct an underlying digestive condition.

Notice whether the swelling follows particular foods, bowel changes, or burning after meals. Persistent symptoms can occur with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Food Intolerance, Lactose Intolerance or Coeliac Disease. Giardiasis and Helicobacter Pylori Infection are less common possibilities that need clinical assessment.

Use Gaviscon only as directed on its label or by a clinician, and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines, have kidney disease, or need to limit sodium. Arrange medical advice if bloating keeps returning, does not settle, or comes with weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, blood in the stool, fever, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, or inability to pass stool or gas.

Ask whether reflux is contributing, whether another medicine could be causing symptoms, and which warning signs should prompt review. Bring your symptom and food diary, including when the swelling starts and whether passing stool changes it.
