What should you know about gastric bloating?

Short answer
Gastric bloating is abdominal fullness or swelling that can follow swallowed air, digestion, constipation, food intolerance, or another digestive problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
You may feel tightness or pressure, notice your abdomen looks larger, or pass more wind than usual. Bloating can be occasional after a meal or continue and return over time. The sensation may come from gas, movement of food through the gut, stool build-up, or increased sensitivity to normal amounts of intestinal contents.
What gastric bloating can mean
Common triggers include eating quickly, fizzy drinks, chewing gum, large meals, and swallowing air while talking or drinking through a straw. Constipation can leave the abdomen feeling distended, while changes in gut movement can cause bloating with cramps or altered bowel habits.
Some people notice symptoms after particular foods. Lactose intolerance and other forms of food intolerance can cause bloating, wind, or loose stools after eating a trigger. Bloating may also occur with irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, giardiasis, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection; these conditions need assessment rather than a diagnosis based on bloating alone.
Record when the swelling begins, what you ate, your bowel movements, and any associated pain, nausea, vomiting, weight change, or blood in the stool. This pattern can help a clinician decide whether testing or a food review is appropriate.
What you can do
Try eating slowly, taking smaller portions, and chewing thoroughly. Reduce fizzy drinks and notice whether beans, onions, or a particular dairy or wheat-containing food repeatedly triggers symptoms. Do not remove broad food groups for a long period without professional advice, because an overly restricted diet can miss nutritional needs.
Gentle walking after meals may support normal gut movement. Drink fluids regularly and address constipation with gradual fibre changes, unless a clinician has advised a different plan. A pharmacist can discuss whether a short-term product is suitable, especially if you take other medicines or are pregnant.
If food patterns are difficult to interpret, Nutrition Counselling can help you test practical changes safely. For general information about the symptom, see Bloating.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical review if bloating is persistent, keeps returning, or is interfering with eating, sleep, work, or daily activities. Seek advice sooner if it comes with ongoing diarrhoea or constipation, repeated vomiting, worsening pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, or blood or black stool.
Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can signal a problem needing prompt assessment. A clinician may examine your abdomen, review medicines and bowel habits, and choose tests based on the whole pattern.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What causes best fit my timing and other symptoms? Could constipation, a medicine, or a food intolerance be contributing? Do I need testing for coeliac disease, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, or another digestive condition? Which food changes are reasonable, and how long should I try them? What warning signs should prompt urgent care?

Questions people ask
Is gastric bloating the same as excess gas?
Not always. Gas can contribute, but bloating may also reflect constipation, gut movement, or increased sensitivity to normal intestinal contents.
Should I stop eating foods that cause bloating?
Track repeated patterns first and seek dietary advice before making broad or prolonged exclusions, particularly for dairy, wheat, or several food groups.
When does bloating need urgent help?
Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hard swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, or breathing difficulty.
