Can gas cause a headache?

Bloating can be uncomfortable and may increase stress or change your breathing, while the headache has a separate trigger. Skipping meals, poor sleep, heat exposure and not drinking enough can produce headache and digestive upset at the same time. Viral illnesses such as a common cold or COVID-19 may cause headache with nausea or abdominal symptoms. Sinus inflammation and allergic rhinitis can cause facial pressure. Generalised anxiety disorder can amplify bodily sensations. Dengue fever and heat exhaustion need prompt attention when headache comes with fever, marked weakness, vomiting or heavy sweating.

Rest somewhere cool and quiet, drink fluids gradually, and eat a light meal if you have missed food. Gentle movement may help trapped wind, but stop if you feel dizzy or worse. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicine without checking the label or a pharmacist, especially if you are pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, or take other medicines. Record the headache pattern, temperature, fluids, meals and digestive symptoms so a clinician can see whether they coincide.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, vision loss or a severe headache after a head injury. Get prompt medical advice for headache with high fever, bleeding, severe dehydration, heat exposure or worsening illness. A recurring or new headache pattern should be assessed even when gas is also present.
