How the structures involved in Dehydration differ from normal

Short answer

Gamot sa dehydration focuses on replacing water and salts, treating the cause and getting urgent help for severe symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration solution
Warning sign
Confusion, fainting or very little urine

What dehydration means

Dehydration happens when the body loses more fluid than it takes in. Diarrhoea, vomiting, sweating, fever, heat exposure and reduced drinking can all contribute. Thirst, a dry mouth, headache, dizziness, tiredness and dark urine may occur; cloudy urine has other possible explanations. Constipation can also accompany low fluid intake. Dehydration may be mild or may progress to confusion, very little urine and collapse, especially in young children, older adults and people with ongoing illness.

Replacing fluid

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Oral rehydration solutions contain water and salts in a balance designed to replace losses; mix and use them exactly as directed. If vomiting makes drinking difficult, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. Continue suitable food as you recover. A clinician should address the trigger, such as gastroenteritis, heat exhaustion or a urinary infection. Avoid relying on alcohol, and ask for advice if you have a medical condition that affects fluid intake.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little or no urine, fast breathing, or worsening dizziness. Seek prompt assessment after substantial heat exposure, ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea, or if a child or older adult is becoming unusually sleepy. Severe side or back pain with urinary changes needs review because kidney stones or another urinary problem may be involved.

Questions for your doctor

What is likely causing my fluid loss? Which rehydration drink is suitable? How much should I drink given my health conditions? Which symptoms mean I should attend urgent care? Do I need tests for an infection or kidney problem?

Questions people ask

Is water always enough?

Water helps, but an oral rehydration solution may be more suitable when vomiting or diarrhoea has caused salt losses.

Why might urine become dark?

Concentrated urine can occur with dehydration, but persistent or unusual changes should be assessed.
