Chronic kidney disease means the kidneys are not filtering blood normally over time. Early disease may cause few symptoms, while fatigue, excessive thirst, swelling or changes in urination can appear as kidney function changes. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are common conditions that can damage kidneys, so their control forms part of kidney care. Blood and urine tests help track function and protein loss.

Attend monitoring appointments and take prescribed medicines as directed. Your clinician may review blood pressure treatment, blood sugar care, anaemia, mineral balance or fluid management. Do not start painkillers, supplements or herbal products without checking, because some can strain the kidneys or interact with treatment. Follow personalised advice about salt, fluids and protein rather than adopting a restrictive diet on your own. Avoid smoking and keep active within your ability.

Contact your care team if swelling increases, urine changes markedly, fatigue suddenly worsens, or you cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, very little urine, fainting or rapidly worsening weakness. A sudden illness, fever or dehydration can affect kidney function and may require prompt review of medicines and fluids.

Ask what your kidney tests show, which medicines protect function, what pain relief is safe, and which food or fluid changes apply to you. Ask how hypertension, diabetes, gout, anaemia or restless legs symptoms will be monitored alongside CKD.
