What should you know about gait analysis perry?

Short answer

Gait analysis is a structured review of walking or running that links visible movement with symptoms, function, and treatment goals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens during gait analysis

A physiotherapist may first ask about your pain, injury history, work, sport, and everyday walking. They then watch you stand, walk, turn, and possibly run, checking rhythm, step width, foot contact, knee control, hip movement, and balance. The assessment focuses on meaningful differences between sides and on movements that match your symptoms, rather than labelling every variation as a problem.

[3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) can provide a detailed view of body movement. A [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) can show how the feet contact and load the ground.

Making the result useful

Bring your everyday shoes, walking aids, and a short description of when symptoms appear. Wear clothing that permits movement. Ask for the main finding in plain language and how it changes your exercise plan. Depending on the assessment, care may include graded strengthening, mobility work, balance training, activity adjustment, or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) when they fit the clinical reasoning.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for sudden weakness, a sudden inability to walk, severe injury-related pain, or a rapidly developing coordination problem. Make a routine appointment for a limp that persists, recurring trips or falls, foot dragging, or walking pain that restricts usual activities. Do not wait for a gait test if symptoms are rapidly changing.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

What did you observe and how does it relate to my symptoms? Which finding should treatment target first? What can I safely practise at home? Should I use a walking aid temporarily? When should the plan be reassessed?

Questions people ask

Is gait analysis only for running injuries?

No. It can be used for walking difficulty, balance concerns, pain, rehabilitation, and performance questions.

What if the scan shows an asymmetry?

The clinician will interpret it with your history and examination; asymmetry alone does not prove injury or require treatment.
