What should you know about fungus brown spots on skin?

A fungal infection can irritate the surface and leave darker or lighter marks after the active rash settles. Other possibilities include acne, folliculitis, rosacea, hormonal acne, perioral dermatitis, or irritation from shaving and skin products. A clinician considers the location, scale, itch, border, texture, and whether spots are spreading. Some fungal rashes have fine scale or a ring-like edge; old colour change may have no scale at all.

Do not scratch, scrub, bleach, or use steroid cream without advice, because these actions can worsen irritation or hide the rash's appearance. Keep the area dry, use gentle fragrance-free cleansing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing until the cause is clear. Photographing changes in the same lighting can help a clinician compare them.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. A clinician may recommend an antifungal medicine, or a different plan if the marks reflect acne, folliculitis, or another inflammatory condition. Do not assume LED light therapy will treat a fungal infection.

Arrange a dermatology review if spots spread, itch, scale, recur, or remain unexplained. Seek earlier care for pain, warmth, pus, swelling near the eyes, fever, or a rapidly changing dark spot. Urgent assessment is appropriate when a lesion is bleeding, ulcerated, or changing in shape or colour.

Ask whether the spots look active or are leftover pigment, whether a skin scraping or other test is needed, how long treatment should continue, and how to prevent recurrence. Mention new cosmetics, sweating, shaving, medicines, and any household member with a similar rash.
